RECLAMATION is an audiovisual triptych work on the topic of decolonization.

This audiovisual works take you on a journey through the stages of colonization, from the realization of being colonized to the internal struggle with inferiority complex, and ultimately, the process of reclaiming our identity.

The work itself consists of 3 parts.

Part I: Colonization – where we try to depict all the consequences that we still experience due to Russian colonization.

Part II resembles reflection on inferiority complex that have been passed down to us as an unfortunate inheritance from Russian colonization.

Part III : Reclamation – where we regain the power over our identity, reconnect with our roots, confront and challenge the beliefs that have been instilled in your mind by colonizers throughout history. This process allows defining our national identity on our own terms.

The typographic text featured in the visuals are selected to represent each stage of the journey described below. These words are chosen based on synonyms, characteristics, and tags that capture the essence of each stage.

The visuals used as a background, featuring archive photos of Baku, Azerbaijan, and significant individuals from our history.

Accompanying the visual elements are audio compositions that I wrote during the war in Ukraine. This music serves as a reflection of my personal identity and blends motifs inspired by Eastern soundscape and glitchy electronic sounds.

Pay attention to the colors. They are guiding your path. Black and white symbolize the colonial past, offering a stark reminder of the historical context. Red represents the painful experiences endured during this time of colonization, evoking the struggles and challenges faced by our people. Finally, the wise blue hue signifies serenity, stability, and inspiration, and also symbolizes our hopes for a peaceful future akin to the clear blue sky that we aspire to see over Ukraine.
